April
Where did April go?! The end of March and April involved more traveling around and we didn’t do a great job of keeping up. Here’s a recap of what we’ve been up to the last 45 days before we embark on our journey back east!
So, the day before we were supposed to leave Utah for Colorado we had our first pet sit cancel on us the day before it started. But never fear, because it’s the journey and not the destination! We spent another couple of days at the hostel/AirBnB we were at in Murray, UT and then made the quick 6.5 hour drive to Vail, CO to spend the weekend with the Karsh family for some spring-like skiing. We spent the rest of the week at the Super 8, our favorite, super secure hotel in Dillon. We visited some of our favorite local places including Sierra Trading Post, Bamboo Garden, and the local teppanyaki restaurant.
To close out March and begin April we made a week long trip back to North Carolina. We spent the first weekend celebrating Elliot’s (actual) birthday with friends, hanging out with Jeremy’s parents, and cheering on the Wolfpack in the NCAA tournament. Jeremy went up to the lake to help get things ready for the summer, but I stayed back because I had a conference in Washington, DC midweek. I got to catch up with a bunch of friends, and cruise around in my adorable Fiat convertible rental car. I also got to spend an entire day at RDU airport waiting for a 40-minute flight to Washington, DC that was eventually cancelled at 10:30pm. Yay! All flights were booked the following day, so my DC trip was cancelled and I was rebooked on the same flight as Jeremy back to Colorado a day later.
We landed in Denver on Friday morning and immediately went up to Silverthorne for an 11-night pet sit with Joey and Tofu. We watched them last year, and they asked us to come back again. Joey is a typical 3-year old golden retriever; a species that has figured out how to survive on cuteness alone. Tofu is an adorable, elderly cat. She will eat off your plate if you let her, and never hesitates to come sit on my laptop if I don’t migrate to the couch to hang out with her. We spent the first half of the sit together, and the second half we split up because we were double booked for 5 nights with our next sit in Breckenridge.
Typically we only do one sit at a time, BUT the location on Main St. in Breck was too good to resist! Our place was less than a 5-minute walk to the gondola. We spent our final three weeks of the ski season there with our buddy Floyd, a 15-year old rat terrier. Floyd was probably the easiest dog we’ve ever sat. His idea of a “long walk” lasted 10-minutes and one-tenth of a mile, and he would happily stay in his bed for as long as you were in the room with him. While in Breckenridge we got some great skiing both on and off resort, but I’ll let JD cover that in his post! Breckenridge is fairly unique in terms of ski resorts because there is an actual independent town at the base of the mountain. Given our location we had the chance to check out many new happy hour spots, including the world’s highest altitude winery. Fun fact, the base altitude of Breckenridge is about 9,500 ft about sea level, which is 750 feet higher than Silverthorne/Dillon, 1.5K above Vail, and 2K above Beaver Creek/Avon.
We closed out the month and our time in Breckenridge with Passover, a late season snow, and Jeremy’s birthday. We hosted a seder and joined a larger one in Montezuma. We stocked up on matzah (turns out even Floyd was a fan!), and experimented with a new grain substitute. Potato starch surprisingly makes for some pretty decent crackers and even a birthday cake! Our final weekend brought over a foot of snow and a surprise guest appearance from Phish fish. We skied with friends, and closed down the local arcade that night. It’s been a fun winter, and we’re ready to head back down the mountain to start our journey back east for the summer!
